Gransom Hayes offers up his humble attempts with rhyme and verse so that anyone would be able to read poetry free online. Please be gentle! I don’t claim to be a poet. But occasionally an experience, such as the Ukrainian Ballet or a book like, Where the Crawdads Sing, inspires enough that the mood strikes.

If my humble attempt at poetry wasn’t too bad, you might enjoy a short story or two, also posted and available to be read online for free. I’d like to think I’m a bit better at writing stories and novels. Sign up for the newsletter so you know when something new is published. Thanks for stopping by.

Tendrils of Time

by Gransom Hayes

Author comments: When the Ukrainian Ballet came through in 2022, the compulsion to see them was hard to resist. I don’t know much about ballet, but I was deeply moved by their performance. So much so that I was compelled to write this poem. The movement was breathtaking. They had a strength of presence that could not be denied. If you have a chance to see them, don’t pass it up.

Rekindling Connections

by Gransom Hayes

Author comments: Have you ever fallen out of touch with family? Maybe because of circumstances beyond your control or because of some conflict buried in the past. I often wonder about kinships lost…

White Lies

by Gransom Hayes

Author comments: We’ve all heard some version of the saying that we lie so that we don’t have to hurt someone else’s feelings or we lie to avoid an argument. Well, fair enough … I guess. But have we ever considered how lying impacts ourselves?

Passing Ghosts

by Gransom Hayes

Author comments: I often find myself wondering, have I wasted too much time? Did I do what I was meant to? I mean, in the end we’ll know … right?

Budding Universe

by Gransom Hayes

Author comments:

I sometimes think about how relationships are forged. It seems like people tend to be on their best behavior at the start. Okay, sure, that makes sense to a certain extent. Like Jeff Goldblum said in that movie “You gotta let the crazy out a little bit at a time.” But how about this: Maybe don’t try and full-on bedazzle each other right out of the gate. Because once you win each other over, and you commit, and I mean really commit, you may suddenly find yourselves awash in the day to day wondering where the hell the magic went. Wondering how all the grand gestures and eloquent romanticisms somehow became things of the past, growing ever more distant.

How does this impact our relationships? I wonder if maybe it would be a better idea to start with the everyday stuff. Go for a walk, go to the grocery store, make a meal, do the dishes together. I mean, isn’t this the sort stuff you’ll be doing for the rest of your lives together? Maybe consider really getting to know the root of a person rather than loosing ourselves right off the bat with all that grand gesturing. Then, once you’ve built a solid foundation, peg the needle on that romance-o-meter. Because the real magic, true magic of relationships is built over time.
